International Womans Day 2021

International Women's Day 2021 at Elliott

For International Women's Day 2021, we spoke to women working in different departments across Elliott for their experiences.

Lindsey Crabtree, one of the pre-construction managers within our OSS team, has been working in the construction industry for 20 years. She said:

'To any women considering a career in construction I would say get stuck in, learn your core discipline and skill set and don’t be afraid to ask questions particularly of those who have a wealth of knowledge. You will soon learn that there are many women who are high achievers within the industry who will hopefully be an inspiration to you.

The construction industry is tough regardless of gender, however, working in an environment where team camaraderie leads to successful tangible results that have a positive impact on communities makes going to work every day meaningful and a very positive experience.'

Emily Pavey, our Internal Sales Director, said:

‘Thanks to the guidance and support of Amanda Jones my line manager and Head of Key Accounts at the time I progressed to Internal Sales Manager where I managed a team of 18 Internal Sales Executives. During this time I completed the Elliott leadership programme which helped to prepare me for my promotion last year in to my current senior role.

Over the years I have noticed a significant change in the male dominance stereotypically assumed to be found within the construction sector and would urge women not to be put off seeking employment in an industry which has served me so well thus far.‘

We also spoke to Ev Charczuk, who works as a Site Manager at our Deeside branch, about her experiences since joining Elliott a year ago.

‘I remember my initial overwhelming reaction to a sheer size of the project ahead of me. Not only I was excited but also seen it as a challenge. I wanted to make a difference.

One year on and I’m still excited about the opportunity and the role I was offered. No two days are the same. Sometimes things don’t go quite as planned, but that’s ok as we can learn from it!

I was sceptical whether or not the construction industry would be something I would ever enjoy. Today, I’m glad I took this route and I don’t look back.’

We're proud of the work we've done to support women in construction, and of the positive experiences our employees have had!
