Algeco photo finish at McDonalds Aston ready for Commonwealth Games

Our offsite team recently handed over the new McDonald’s restaurant in Aston, Birmingham, ready for the start of the Commonwealth Games. The official opening took place on Tuesday 26th July, with support from Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and Michelin Star Chef Aktar Islam.

Opening the new restaurant was a race against time to have it ready for the start of the Games, although our offsite team always knew that they would do it. The restaurant was built in just 57 days, with the team achieving its pre-Games opening date target, with two-and-a-half days to spare. The latest new McDonald’s restaurant supplied by Algeco is just half-a-mile from the Alexander Stadium and it is hoping to pick up trade from the thousands of visitors to the Games as well as residents across the wider Perry Bar area of Birmingham.

The building modules were constructed in our Carnaby production facility using the Algeco offsite building system and achieved a PMV (Pre Manufactured Value, a measure of the amount of work that is completed on the building modules before they are is delivered to site) of around 80%. This was crucial to optimising efficiency once the modules were on site, because it ensuring rapid speed of construction. The new 24-hour drive-thru includes a range of innovations, including smart digital drive-thru boards, self-service kiosks, eight Instavolt rapid electric charging points capable of charging an electric car’s battery to 80 per cent in 20 minutes. Inside, the restaurant uses recycled coffee cups, LED lights, furniture made from recycled materials and fully recyclable floor and wall tiles. It also has three bee hotels outside, agreed as part of the construction deal!

Delivering this new offsite restaurant in time for the Games was achieved through our offsite team working as an integral part of the McDonald’s project delivery team. It meant that once on-site, it was a straightforward process of positioning the modules and then connected them to services before they underwent final fit-out ready for handover.

The ability of the Algeco team to achieve a consistently high PMV on all our offsite and modular construction projects provides additional benefits in terms of minimised waste and disruption to local communities because of fewer deliveries to site. Within the retail sector it means that clients can be trading much quicker than a conventional on-site build. It also ensures a consistent approach to quality throughout the project, which is essential to ensure the energy efficiency of the completed building.

Building modules for Aston were constructed using a steel-framed system, a 100% recyclable material sourced from a UK supplier with certified Environmental Policy Declarations. They are designed to have a service life of at least 60 years. The building is designed to allow relocation, reconfiguration or recycling, depending on McDonald’s future requirements.

In addition, the lightweight structure of the Algeco steel frame modules minimise carbon intensive foundations. These were completed at the same time as the modules were manufactured, helping to reduce the build schedule by around half compared to an on-site build.
